Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about PAT testing.

PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) is the process of inspecting and electrically testing portable electrical equipment to ensure it is safe to use. It involves a visual inspection followed by a series of electrical tests using specialist equipment, resulting in a pass or fail record for each appliance.

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that all electrical systems, including portable appliances, are maintained in a safe condition. While the regulations don't explicitly name PAT testing, it is widely accepted as the recognised way to demonstrate compliance. Landlords also have additional obligations under the Housing Act.

Testing is charged at £1.00 per item. If you have fewer than 50 items, a flat £50 call-out charge applies instead — and this includes up to your first 50 items. So if you have 30 items the total is £50, not £30. Once you go over 50 items you simply pay £1.00 per item with no call-out charge on top. We always provide a clear quote upfront with no surprises.

We test all portable electrical equipment including computers, monitors, printers, kettles, microwaves, toasters, extension leads, power tools, floor lamps, heaters, fans, amplifiers, mixers, DJ equipment and much more. If it plugs in, we can test it.

A typical office with 50 items can be completed in around 1–2 hours. For larger sites we may need a full day or more. We always provide an estimated duration when you book and work efficiently to minimise any disruption to your business.

Failed appliances receive a clear "FAIL" label with fuse removed if applicable, and are recorded in your certificate. Where possible, minor faults such as damaged plugs are repaired on the spot at cost.
